No doubt this scene made me fall in love with buses, headbands, fur coats, luggage, dour expressions, beards and Nico's "These Days." For the next three years I would take all of my meals standing up and refuse to dress as anything other than a one-socked Richie Tennenbaum.
Things got sort of played out for awhile there, but then 100dBs & Ryan O'Neil popped this acid raindrop joint that takes it all back. It's calming, like a large plate of ribs and warm milk or the sound of a one-handed man rapping.
Keep your V-day spirits high with a special mix from 100dBs. Dan knows you don't bring Kool-Aid to a grown man's party so this is all classic heat.
Stevie Wonder - I Don't Know Why Jimmy Ruffin - What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted The Mad Lads - I Don't Want To Lose Your Love Chuck Jackson - I Like Everything About You Dionne Warwick - Walk On By Sly And The Family Stone - If You Want Me To Stay Tom Tom Club - Genius Of Love Otis Redding - Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay Simon And Garfunkel - Cecilia Jackson Five - I Want You Back
We've been giving lots of love to 100dbs lately, mainly because MC/DJ/producer Dan Brenner sent us mad beats like two months ago that still haven't left Loretta's mouth (Loretta is the name of my Volvo). Witness Brenner's Breaks, a sticky slow simmer comp released this February that's still working its way around the speakeasy.
My one request to Dan - on track 17 you briefly sample the super ill intro to The Zombie's "Summertime" - pull that out in full son! We need more British Invasion in the hip hop.
Was going to put some motivational stuff up here about how it's the weekend, get ready with these beats, etc. but then sweet beard of Zeus I found the best video ever on YouTube ever (said ever twice on purpose). Yelle - ACDG
We like the guy on the left that just kind of stands there looking cool next to the E. Must post another one, but this time with more neon lollipops.
New beats for your weekend - 100dBs. Before we say anything, open this link in a new window and bob your backpack while they rock the milk out your cat:
Fans of DJ Premier's two-bar cardboard breaks and scratched out choruses come for the production, buhloone mindstate heads stay for O'Neil's graduation ceremony laments on the materialized state of crime n' Crystal n' pissed out elevator shafts. Read the full Beatbots album review here. Close competition for best Paper Planes of the year:
Lastly and most importantly, if you like what you hear (and all the great free music on their site) drop them a line and pick up the new album for only $8 by bob digi download here. It's the sound of some talented, hard-working hip hop heads seeking enlightenment through the hustle.
Update: Check out an interview with Brenner and O'Neil via Urban Species here.
